Since I had read about this film in ELLE magazine, I wanted to see it. It was only until last week that I actually did see it. My expectations were high and I couldn’t wait to finally watch it.

The movie started of with a fragment of the old Pierre Berger in the current time. The rest of the movie was a flashback. You saw how Yves Saint Laurent started at Dior, were he got the lead after mister Dior died. A few years he had to service the country in the ware between Algeria and France. He couldn’t handle it and after a few weeks he had a nervous breakdown. He struggled with depression and soon he was fired at Dior. Monsieur Laurent didn’t want to quit fashion and decided to start ‘une maison du couturier’ himself.

The film shows you how he started his brand and how hard it (financially) was. They show you all the ups and downs the brand and the designer had. His first show with YSL there was a divided success. After reading the articles Yves said to his partner (Pierre Bergé): “The expectations were so high that I could only disappoint”. I think this quote really captures what a lot of designers struggle with. They always have to be better and if they are not, the press tears them apart. But I think everybody has his limit and the press likes to push everyone over his or her limit.

I really enjoyed watching the film. I like how it showed that fashion isn’t always a glamorous world. The actors were just great! I think there is a big resemblance between the actor Pierre Niney and Yves Saint Laurent himself.Yves struggled with a drug and alcohol problem and I think they made it seem less bad than it was. I totally understand, because you don’t want to talk bad about the death. I recommend this film to everyone who loves fashion and a bit of drama.

So are you a follower or not? That’s my question…
Sincerely
